Overview
The Open Sun 1050 is the strongest piece of equipment at City Tropics and the only full high-pressure bed we run. High pressure is not simply more lamps. A high-pressure lamp filters out most of the UV-B that causes burning and delivers a far higher proportion of UV-A, which works on the melanin already in your skin rather than producing new melanin from scratch. In practice that means colour that appears faster, sits deeper, holds longer, and is much less likely to leave you red the following morning.
The bed carries 27 body lamps at 580 watts each and three facial lamps at 640 watts, roughly 21,500 watts in total, all of it high pressure and all of it glass reflector. The maximum session is 12 minutes, and that is not a suggestion. Because there is so little UV-B in the mix, longer is not better, and our staff will set your time conservatively.
Comfort is built to match the power. Fan Cooling Plus moves a serious volume of air, and the Multi Relax acrylic is contoured so your body is supported rather than flattened. A 32-field LED display puts the whole session in front of you, and a stereo with MP3 connection means you bring your own soundtrack.
Because of the way high-pressure tanning works, most people use this bed on a different schedule from the others: fewer sessions, spaced further apart, maintaining colour rather than rebuilding it every few days. If you have never tanned in a high-pressure bed, speak to our staff first. The Open Sun 1050 is at both North Arlington and Nutley.
-
True high pressure throughout
All 27 body lamps and all three facials are high-pressure glass reflectors, not a conventional bed with high-pressure facials bolted on.
-
21,500 watts, 12-minute ceiling
The most power on our floor and the firmest time limit, because with high pressure a longer session is not a better one.
-
Colour that holds longer
High-pressure output is weighted to UV-A, which develops the melanin you already have. The result tends to hold for weeks rather than days.
-
Fan Cooling Plus and Multi Relax acrylic
Heavy airflow and a contoured base, because a bed this strong has to be comfortable to be usable.

Who it is for
Choose the Open Sun 1050 if you already have a base tan and want to deepen and hold it in as few visits as possible, or if you have an event coming up and want colour that develops quickly and stays. It is the right bed for people who have found conventional beds slow.
It is not the right first bed. High-pressure tanning behaves differently from everything else on the floor, the 12-minute ceiling is firm, and the usual habit of going more often does not help here; it works on a longer interval between visits.
If you are starting out, build a base in the Passion 40/3 or the Sunrise 480 first, then move up.
Before and after your session
- Before. Come with clean, dry skin and no make-up, perfume or sunscreen. Anything on the surface blocks light unevenly and shows up as patches.
- Eyewear is not optional. Closed eyelids do not block UV. Ask at the desk if you did not bring any.
- During. Use the timer the staff set for you rather than the maximum on the bed. Colour is built over several sessions, not in one long one.
- After. Moisturise while your skin is still warm, and keep doing it daily. Dry skin sheds, and the tan goes with it.
- Between sessions. Leave at least 24 hours, and longer on a high-pressure bed. Drink water and avoid long hot showers, which strip moisture.
- Tell us about medication. Some prescriptions make skin far more light-sensitive. Mention anything new before your session.
Questions
What is the difference between high pressure and a regular tanning bed?
A high-pressure lamp filters out most UV-B and delivers mainly UV-A. UV-B builds new melanin and is what burns you; UV-A darkens the melanin you already have. High-pressure results appear faster and last longer, and burning is far less likely, but you need some existing base colour for it to work on.
How often should I use the Open Sun 1050?
Less often than a conventional bed. Most people come every one to three weeks to maintain colour rather than every few days. Our staff will set a schedule with you.
Can I use it on my first visit?
We would rather you did not. Build a base in one of the mid-level beds first, because high pressure works on melanin that is already there.
How long is a session?
Twelve minutes maximum, and beginners on this bed start well below it.
Which locations have the Open Sun 1050?
Both North Arlington and Nutley.
