Overview
The Passion 40/3 is the bed most first-timers at City Tropics start with, and the one plenty of regulars never leave. It is a mid-level lie-down unit built around 40 full-length Turbo/Super Power body lamps, which means the light reaches you evenly from shoulder to ankle instead of concentrating in a hot band across your middle. Even coverage is what separates a tan that looks like a tan from one that looks like a sunburn in progress.
Above your head sit three 400-watt high-pressure glass-reflector facial lamps, with two UV-B spaghetti lamps filling in the same area. Facial skin is thinner and tans more slowly than the skin on your back or legs, so without dedicated facial units your face finishes several shades behind the rest of you. The facial section is adjustable, so you can ease it back if you tan quickly on the face, or push it up if your face is lagging.
All of that adds up to roughly 9,000 watts and a maximum session of 15 minutes. Fifteen minutes is a comfortable window: long enough to build colour steadily, short enough that you are not baking. Comfort Cooling keeps air moving across you for the whole session, and the Ergonomic Bodyform Plus base is contoured rather than flat, so your lower back is supported instead of pressed against a hard sheet of acrylic.
Controls sit on an EZ-Touch glass front panel, and Stereo Sound Plus takes an MP3 connection so you can bring your own music. The Passion 40/3 is on the floor at our Nutley location.

Who it is for
Choose the Passion 40/3 if you are new to tanning, coming back after a long break, or you burn easily and want to build colour in controlled steps. Fifteen minutes at 9,000 watts is a forgiving amount of light. It rewards a regular schedule rather than punishing a single long session.
It is also the right bed if you want a straightforward session with no misting, no aromatherapy and no light show. Lie down, set the timer, listen to your own music, get out.
If you are already dark and want to hold that colour in fewer, shorter visits, look at the Super Beds instead. They put considerably more light on you in less time.
Before and after your session
- Before. Come with clean, dry skin and no make-up, perfume or sunscreen. Anything on the surface blocks light unevenly and shows up as patches.
- Eyewear is not optional. Closed eyelids do not block UV. Ask at the desk if you did not bring any.
- During. Use the timer the staff set for you rather than the maximum on the bed. Colour is built over several sessions, not in one long one.
- After. Moisturise while your skin is still warm, and keep doing it daily. Dry skin sheds, and the tan goes with it.
- Between sessions. Leave at least 24 hours, and longer on a high-pressure bed. Drink water and avoid long hot showers, which strip moisture.
- Tell us about medication. Some prescriptions make skin far more light-sensitive. Mention anything new before your session.
Questions
How long is a session in the Passion 40/3?
Up to 15 minutes. If this is your first visit, or your first in a while, our staff will start you well under that and build up over several sessions.
Is the Passion 40/3 a high-pressure bed?
No. The body lamps are conventional Turbo/Super Power lamps. The three facial lamps are high-pressure glass reflectors. If you want a full high-pressure bed, ask about the Open Sun 1050.
Can I turn the facial lamps down?
Yes. The facial section is adjustable from the control panel, so you can reduce it if your face tans faster than your body.
