Preparation and Maintenance Tips
Preparation
Before you get in the tanning bed, it’s important to shower, shave, and exfoliate. Just like spray tanning, exfoliating off the dead skin will help you get a more even tan. It’s also important to avoid shaving or exfoliating right before the tanning bed, as your skin may be sensitive. The best time to do this is two days to 24 hours before your tanning session.
Remove your makeup and jewelry.
You’ll want to remove all your jewelry, like rings, necklaces, and bracelets, to ensure you don’t get any tan lines. You should also remove any makeup as it can potentially block UV rays from tanning your skin. By keeping your makeup on, you may end up with uneven tan results!
In addition to makeup and jewelry, steer clear of using essential oils and perfume. When they’re exposed to UV rays, they can potentially cause rashes on the skin or increased skin sensitivity.
Use protection for your eyes and lips.
Even though we close our eyes in the tanning bed, it doesn’t actually provide sufficient protection from the UV rays. They can still pass through the eyelids and cause damage. To help prevent this, using the sunbed goggles we provide is always advised.
When it comes to our lips, they don’t have melanin like the other parts of our body. This means that tanning doesn’t make them darker or more tan. Instead, they become chapped and dry and can develop wrinkles over time. To save your lips from potential UV damage, we recommend wearing an SPF lip balm. Ask our front desk for more details.
Use tanning lotion.
To maximize your tanning results, ask the front desk for a specifically designed UV tanning lotion. These lotions help your skin absorb UV rays faster, provide a more even tan, and keep your skin looking hydrated and healthy.
